What It Protects Against:
- Black Spot Disease: Prevents fungal infections that cause unsightly black
spots on banana skin - Thrips Damage: Shields bunches from thrips and other insects that damage fruit
appearance - Environmental Stress: Protects from wind scarring, dust accumulation, and
sunburn - Bird and Bat Damage: Prevents feeding damage from birds and bats
- Physical Injury: Reduces bruising and mechanical damage during bunch
development
Benefits:
Using Banana Bunch Covers delivers significant advantages for commercial banana
cultivation:
- Protection from Black Spot: Effectively prevents black spot disease, ensuring
clean, blemish-free banana skin that commands premium prices in the market - Thrips and Pest Control: Creates a physical barrier against thrips, insects, and
other pests without requiring chemical pesticides - Environmental Protection: Shields bunches from wind damage, dust, extreme
temperatures, and harsh weather conditions - Reduced Flowering to Harvesting Interval: Creates a microclimate that
accelerates fruit development, reducing the time from flowering to harvest by 7- 10 days - Enhanced Fruit Quality: Produces bananas with superior quality characteristics - uniform ripening, better size, and improved overall appearance
- Improved Shininess and Color: Results in bright yellow bananas with attractive
shine and uniform color, increasing market value by 20-30% - Higher Market Value: Premium quality appearance allows farmers to command
better prices and access high-value markets - Reduced Chemical Usage: Minimizes need for fungicide and pesticide
applications, reducing costs and promoting organic farming - Lower Rejection Rates: Significantly reduces fruit rejection at market due to
blemishes, spots, or damage - Consistent Quality: Ensures uniform bunch quality across the entire plantation,
making marketing and grading easier - Better Shelf Life: Protected bananas have longer shelf life due to reduced pre-
harvest stress and damage
Method of Application:
Follow these simple steps for effective banana bunch cover application:
Remove Male Flower: Wait until the male flower (bell) at the end of the banana
bunch naturally drops off or carefully remove it. This is typically 7-10 days after
the bunch emerges from the plant. The bunch should have all hands (clusters)
fully formed and fingers pointing upward.
Optimal Timing:
- Apply covers when fingers are still pointing upward (not yet curved downward)
- Ideal application time is when the bunch is 3-4 weeks old
- Apply in morning hours to avoid heat stress
Insert Banana Bunch Cover: Carefully slide the banana bunch cover over the
entire bunch from bottom to top. For tube-style covers, ensure the cover slides
smoothly over all hands without damaging the delicate fruit. The cover should
completely enclose the bunch with some extra material at both ends.
- Handle the bunch gently to avoid bruising
- Work carefully to prevent damaging fingers or hands
- Ensure the cover is properly positioned to cover all exposed fruit
- Use appropriate size cover based on bunch size (large bunches need tube cut,
- smaller bunches can use pouch)
Pack Both Sides: After the cover is properly positioned over the bunch, secure
both the top and bottom ends. Gather the excess material at the top (near the
stalk) and bottom (where the male flower was removed) and pack it snugly. This
can be done by simply folding and tucking the material or using a light tie if
needed. Ensure the packing is not too tight to allow for fruit expansion during
growth.
Important Notes:
- Complete the entire process in one session for each bunch
- Train workers properly for consistent application
- Keep records of application dates for harvest planning
- Covers remain on bunches until harvest
- Remove covers carefully at harvest to avoid damaging fruit
